Session 1

Agents, and Tokens, and ANGEL...oh my!
Using tokens in ANGEL courses

Michelle Chandler
Online Instructional Designer, Lone Star College-Online
Agents can automate many repetitive tasks or add increased interactivity to an online course. Tokens may be used in page text or other context which allows the Content Manager to automatically replace each token with the appropriate value, such as, a name, date, time, etc. These two features of ANGEL help make a course more interactive and efficient. For example, you can set up an agent using tokens that will create and email a certificate of completion with the student's name and date when a particular assignment has been completed. This will be a hands-on session where participants will learn and practice how to create an agent with and without tokens. The last part of the session will be "try it yourself" where participants will create their own agents and ask questions if needed.

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Session 2

Using Pedagogy to Effectively Leverage Technology
in Online & Blended Courses -
Instructional theories for selecting and using Web 2.0

Ed Bowen
Director of New Products, Dallas TeleCollege Online

Emerging technologies have been heralded as providing the opportunities and affordances to transform education, learning, and teaching. The picture of how such technologies are used is fuzzy. What instructional theories guide the utilization of emerging technologies in online and blended classes? Participants in this seminar will examine underlying instructional theories and use emerging technologies to create an engaging learning activity. In this immersive, hands-on session, we will explore the implications of such a claim and offer strategies to select tools that support learning while considering the technical requirements, costs, and benefits. Participants will use emerging technologies to create an engaging learning experience. Join us to learn and share in an open, collaborative, and informative seminar.

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Session 3

Connections: Accessibility, Universal Design, Learning styles,
and Technology

Trish Trifilo
Diretor of Online Learning, Hardin-Simmons University

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508 requires electronic and information technology to be accessible to people with disabilities. What are these disabilities and exactly what is expected? While we commonly think about video and web page access, we must consider all course materials including MS Word documents, PowerPoint Presentations, and PDF documents. Providing materials to meet different learning styles can complicate this already challenging process. Blackboard has made accessibility a priority.  This hands-on workshop will take examples of many different learning materials and show how to meet the 508 guidelines.  We will practice on the Blackboard LMS and share experiences.

Designing Online Courses with Quality Matters in Mind -
Quality Matters

Michelle Chandler
Online Instructional Designer, Lone Star College-Online
Quality Matters is a collegial review process that requires reviewers to provide feedback on course design by taking a students' perspective with regard to clarity and organization. In this workshop, we will review the QM rubric; identify online course components currently not meeting QM expectations; share ideas for improving online courses; and identify elements in your own course that meet standards and areas that need revisions. In this workshop, we will (1) review the QM rubric; (2) identify online course components currently not meeting QM expectations; (3) share ideas for improving online courses with other participants and facilitator; (4) identify elements in your own course that meet standards and areas that need revisions.
